Hazing
Hazing is strictly prohibited at Gogebic Community College. No student or student organization is permitted to engage in or support any form of hazing. Individuals found responsible for participating in such actions may face disciplinary action from the college, as well as possible civil and criminal penalties.
Gogebic Community College fully complies with both Michigan state law, including "Garret’s Law," and applicable federal regulations related to hazing.
Definition of Hazing
Hazing refers to any deliberate or reckless act—whether done alone or with others—that targets an individual or group during activities related to joining, affiliating with, or remaining in a student group or organization. Consent from the person being hazed does not excuse the behavior.

Acts considered hazing may include—but are not limited to—the following when they create a risk of physical or mental harm beyond what is typical of participation in college activities or athletic training:
- Physical abuse such as hitting, whipping, shocking with electricity, or applying harmful substances to the body;
- Forcing or pressuring someone to endure sleep deprivation, exposure to extreme weather, confinement in tight spaces, excessive physical activity, or similar actions;
- Coercing someone to consume food, liquids, alcohol, drugs, or other substances against their will;
- Pressuring or requiring someone to engage in sexual acts;
- Using threats or intimidating behavior that causes someone to fear for their safety;
- Involvement in or encouragement of behavior that violates local, state, tribal, or federal laws.
Any action that compels another person to commit illegal acts or tasks under pressure may also be considered hazing.
