Computers are not going away in the foreseeable future. Connecting computers together to uses shared resources or to communicate with each other is the function of computer networking. The internet is one giant computer network. But, smaller organizations also use networked computers. Retail store registers, law office computers, manufacturer computers for ordering and job entry, hotel and entertainment organizations, service clubs, and all sorts of other organizations have the need for networked computers.

Network administrators are responsible for the day-to-day operation of computer networks. They install, configure, and support an organization's local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and Internet systems or a segment of a network system. They monitor the network to ensure network availability to all system users and may perform necessary maintenance to support network availability.
