Mission Statement “The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.” History Phi Theta Kappa was established in Columbia, Missouri in 1910. Soon the organization spread from one college to eight, and eventually went from only covering women’s junior colleges to covering all junior colleges. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges. Since then, the organization has grown from offering only few programs and services to offering many. PTK Today PTK is the largest honor society for higher education. There are over 1.5 million members and 1,200 chapters. There are many activities sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa as well as many scholarship benefits for the members. Member Requirements The student must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have completed at least 12 semester hours. After being inducted, the student must maintain a 3.25 GPA. The students must also adhere to the college code of conduct. A letter will be sent to the student in the mail informing them that they are eligible to be a member. Upon the payment of the lifetime membership fee of $50, the student will be inducted into the honor society. Participation in Phi Theta Kappa activities is not mandatory, but those who do participate receive points that can earn them things such as tee-shirts and a stole for graduation. |
