Allied Health programs receive donated ambulance

The Allied Health programs at Gogebic Community College recently obtained a 1998 ambulance through a generous donation by the Lawrence Kutz family and Beacon Ambulance. This donation became possible through the efforts of Randy Forstrom, Operations Manager at Beacon Ambulance and GCC Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program instructor/coordinator.

“When I took over the (EMS) coordinator position at GCC, I approached the Kutz family to donate one ambulance that was coming out of service,” said Forstrom. The relationship between the Kutz family and GCC has been very strong since 1980. “All of the EMS students at GCC throughout the years have completed all of their clinicals through Beacon Ambulance,” stated Forstrom.

The ambulance was recently decaled with the college logo, in school colors, to recognize the donation and its purpose which is an EMS Paramedic Instructional Unit. The rig is fully stocked with equipment to treat and transport at the basic and advanced levels. It includes heart monitors, intravenous equipment, oxygen, splinting and hazardous-materials to name a few. It also includes full functioning radios for the students to use during training.

Gogebic Community College currently offers two programs in EMS. The Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program is a two semester specialized program which includes 96 clinical hours. Students learn all life support issues including back boarding, splinting, defibrillation, and patient assessment. After completing the program, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry Licensed exam for EMTs.

The Paramedic program is a five semester Associate degree or certificate program and includes 1100 hours of clinical and classroom time. Students in this program learn advanced life support, intravenous, medication, advanced airway, electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring and interpretation, advanced cardiac, pediatric, and neo-natal life support. Openings are still available for the fall 2013 semester in both programs.
