TRIO – Student Support Services Administrative Office Assistant

Gogebic Community College seeks candidates for this part-time secretarial position, which begins in January 2010. This position provides administrative support to TRIO program staff to assist in meeting the goals and objectives of the Student Support Services grant.

Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have a minimum of an Associates’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university as the U.S. Department of Education recognizes, experience related to the position including experience with data entry, ACCESS database software and file maintenance, recognize, accept, and adhere to the community college mission and philosophy and/or community college experience. Additionally, the preferred candidate will have excellent interpersonal communication skills, strong computer skills, knowledge of and commitment to student development and will exhibit a strong commitment to exceptional customer service. Manager - Lindquist Student Center

Gogebic Community College seeks candidates for this full-time management assignment, which begins in August 2009. This position is a combination of four separate and related job duties. Primary is the management of the Lindquist Student Center. The position also supervises the Student Life program, serves as Assistant Athletic Director and provides substantial support for international students.

Allied Health Program Coordinator, Houghton MI

Gogebic Community College seeks candidates for this part time assignment in Houghton. The position is responsible for recruiting, orientation, admission, advising, and other duties for the Allied Health Division.

Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have a Baccalaureate Degree in a health care (an RN license is preferred), social science, or education related field from a regionally accredited college or university (as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education); a minimum of two years full-time work experience in a health care or education related environment; recognize, accept, and adhere to the community college mission and philosophy; and experience in the use of personal computer applications.

This position may require some regional travel. A valid driver’s license is required.

Residential Community Advisor Office of Housing and Residential Life

Position Description: The Residential Community Advisor (RCA) is a live-in student staff member. The RCA works to create a positive learning community in Campus Suites that supports student development in conjunction with the broader Gogebic Community mission. RCAs need to be accessible and approachable and are expected to be positive and healthy academic and community role models. Student staff must be able to model effective study and time management skills, be knowledgeable of academic/campus resources and be willing to assist other students in their academic and personal growth and development.

Qualifications:

  1. On August 1, 2007 successful candidates must have a minimum CUM GPA of 3.0 and have completed at least 27 credits. Offers may be made prior to the completion of the Spring Semester 2007, but should a candidate not meet the required credit/GPA standards by August 1, 2007, he/she will be ineligible for employment as an RCA.
  2. During the period of employment, the RCA must be enrolled as a student at Gogebic Community College with a minimum credit load of twelve semester hours.
  3. Must demonstrate evidence of leadership experience.
  4. Must be in good behavioral standing with Gogebic Community College.
  5. Must maintain a minimum CUM GPA of 2.5 and achieve minimum semester GPAs of 2.5 throughout the period of employment.
  6. Due to the nature of the position, the RCM is expected to seek supervisor approval for substantial outside time commitments.
  7. The person recommended for hire will be required to provide criminal background information as requested.

The specific duties and responsibilities for the RCM position are outlined below:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Establish and maintain an environment supportive of successful academic achievement through implementation of activities and strategies that contribute to students’ academic success, helping students utilize academic resources on campus, and being aware of student attitudes and academic achievements and difficulties.
  2. Utilize assessment and campus resources to develop a positive learning community in the following ways:
    1. Intentional Community Development through personal connections with each resident, building connections among residents and groups, connecting residents to the resources available to them in their community, holding regular community meetings, and ensuring that all students are included in the community.
    2. Spontaneous Community Development through unscheduled and/or spur-of-the-moment events and activities that expose residents to their environment and infuse fun and energy into the community to connect residents, build resident friendships and networks, and promote a community atmosphere.
    3. Passive Community Development through information sharing to educate the residential community by addressing alternative learning styles and to inform students about available resources. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining bulletin boards, writing a community newsletter and utilizing multiple methods of communication (email, voice mail, postings, IM, etc.)
    4. Programmatic Community Development through active engagement of residents in intentionally planned and structured programming events. Topics to be focused on include academics, alcohol, and diversity/social justice.
  3. Promote student involvement and leadership development through assessing each resident’s interests and needs, encouraging resident’s involvement on campus, and recruiting and supporting resident participation in the community and campus governance structure.
  4. Work consistently to create a civil and respectful atmosphere in the residential community by knowing and educating the community on college and residential life policies, facilitating positive community standards, confronting and documenting inappropriate behavior as well as health and safety risks, and mediating conflicts between residents.
  5. Be a positive and supportive member of the Campus Suites team. This includes positively representing the views of the team, working cooperatively and meeting regularly with other staff members, resolving employment related conflicts in an appropriate and professional manner, and working as a team with other units (Administrative, Maintenance, Custodial, etc.)
  6. Support the Gogebic Community College non-discrimination statement and the Student Life commitment to diversity and social justice. This includes, though not exclusively, actively supporting all people by creating a welcoming community, promoting diversity and social justice programming, confronting hurtful and hateful comments, and educating others about respect and social justice.
  7. Develop and maintain a residential environment which is conducive to the overall development of students and is supportive of the academic mission of Gogebic Community College and of the academic goals and pursuits of students.

Other Duties and Expectations:

  1. Attend Student Services staff meetings as requested.
  2. Meet regularly with Residential Community Manager.
  3. Serve as the on call staff person as scheduled.
  4. Prepare and submit occupancy, judicial, annual and other reports as assigned.
  5. Serve on Residential Life committee.
  6. Prepare and submit an annual statement of personal performance goals and objectives.
  7. Assist with surveying students regarding perceptions of on-campus living.
  8. Be available for all building opening/closings.
  9. Other related duties as assigned.

Appointment, Salary and Benefits:

The Residential Community Advisor will hold a student casual labor appointment. This is a part-time 9 month live-in position reporting to the Dean of Student Services. Compensation is yet to be determined and may include: Assistance with rental of a partially furnished room with all utilities provided, free internet access, and a minimum base salary to be determined.
