Can I get a tour of the Campus Suites?
Yes. If you would like to tour the Campus Suites and the rest of campus, please contact the Admissions Office at (906) 932-4231 ext. 347 to arrange for a visit.
How many credits do I need to be able to live in the Campus Suites?
Students must be enrolled in 12 credit hours to live in Campus Suites. Exceptions can be sought by written application in the Office of Student Housing.
Who works in the Campus Suites building?
The Manager of Campus Suites is in charge of the facility. Other staff members include a Resident Advisor on each floor, a Community Assistant, and Front Desk Assistants. Campus maintenance personnel assist with the general upkeep of public areas in the building as well as maintenance problems throughout the building and in individual suites.
Are there employment opportunities within the Campus Suites?
There may be! If you are interested in student employment, contact the Financial Aid Office or call 906-932-4231 ext. 206.
Does the college insure my belongings when I live in Campus Suites?
No, the college is not responsible for the theft, destruction, or loss of your money or personal belongings. We encourage you to carry your own personal property insurance.
Can I have a pet in my suite?
Sorry, the only pets permitted in the Campus Suites are fish in a 10 gallon tank or smaller.
How safe and secure are the suites?
The college as a whole is a very safe place. The Campus Suites building has many safety features including double key entry, electronic surveillance and nighttime management.
Where do I eat?
Each suite has a full kitchen, in which students can prepare each of their meals. In addition, the GCC Snack Bar, located steps away in the Lindquist Student Center, is open with a variety of food choices. Hours of operation are posted throughout campus. Several fast food and full service restaurants are also located near campus.
What kind of public transportation is available?
Gogebic County offers public bus system that runs throughout the county and includes the college. Call 906-932-2523 for information and schedules.
Can I bring my car to campus?
Yes. Parking for students who live in the campus suites Campus Suites is located in a designated area close to your suite. Residents will need to register their vehicles with the Office of Student Housing upon moving into the building.
How do I apply to live in GCC Campus Suites?
Print the Campus Suites packet and mail in the application and contract with your application fee and security deposit or call the Admissions Office at 906-932-4231 ext. 306 or the Office of Student Housing at 906-932-4231 ext. 268 to have an application packet mailed to you.
Are incoming freshman guaranteed to get a space in the Campus Suites?
Students are accepted to live in the Campus Suites on a first come/first served basis in the order that we receive a fully completed application, signed contract, application fee, and security deposit.
How do I request a single room?
On the application, there is a space to indicate either your preference for a single or double room. Unfortunately, granting requests for a single room is not guaranteed as it depends on occupancy demand. If the request is granted, the single room has an additional charge to the regular room rate.
What is the length of my housing contract?
All housing contracts are valid for the entire academic year, with the exception of SAM students leaving for co-op work experiences and those who have officially graduated at mid-year.
Can I be released from my contract once I have moved in?
You may be granted a contract release with a partial refund if documentation is provided for a reason in one of the following categories: Medical, Financial Hardship, or Extenuating Circumstances (including but not limited to: withdrawal from the college, unplanned marriage, or college-sponsored internship). The Contract Release Form can be picked up from the Office of Student Housing and will need to be approved before a partial refund can be issued.
When can I move into the Campus Suites?
New students will be permitted to move into the building about six days before the semester begins if they need to attend the last Freshman Experience Workshop. Those new students that have already attended their Freshman Experience Workshop and returning students will be able to move into the building the weekend before classes start. Once your space is confirmed, you will receive a move-in packet containing information about that year’s exact move-in dates and times.
Am I allowed to stay in the building over the breaks? Will I need to remove my belongings?
During the breaks, the Campus Suites may close, requiring residents to leave the building for the break. At these times, students would but do not need to remove their belongings unless they are checking out and have been officially released from their contract. Students with special circumstances may petition the Office of Student Housing to remain in the Campus Suites during break periods.
What type of facilities is available to housing residents?
Each student is provided with a semi-private 2-person bedroom and shares a kitchen and bathroom in each suite. The rooms also come with individual controls for heating and air conditioning. Each suite is equipped with a four burner stove top and oven, 16 cubic foot refrigerator, and kitchen sink. A public lobby area and central laundry room are also included. In addition, GCC students may utilize the Lindquist Student Center, GCC computer labs, ACES Center, Mt. Zion, and the Library free of charge.
Where can I do my laundry?
The Campus Suites has laundry facilities located on the first floor. There is a minimal cost for each washer and dryer.
How do I get something in my suite repaired?
You can fill out a work order and submit it to the Maintenance Requests box located on the first floor. The Manager of Campus Suites will send it to the maintenance staff.
How do I adjust the height of my bed?
Submit a maintenance request much like you would do for a maintenance issue in your suite. It is strongly encouraged that you do not try to adjust the height of your bed independently as it is not safe and it greatly increases the risk of damaging the headboards.
Is there a cleaning service for the individual suites?
No. There is maintenance staff to address any maintenance concerns in the individual suites and throughout the building. They also provide custodial services for the common areas throughout the building. Residents are responsible for the cleanliness of their own suite and are expected to keep a relatively clean space, both in their suite and throughout the building. Any concerns with cleanliness could become a safety issue for the building and will be addressed by the Manager of Campus Suites.
How do I get mail and what will my address be?
Each resident is provided a secure mailbox located by the first-floor lobby of the Campus Suites. Mail is delivered directly to residents’ mailboxes Monday-Friday on the days the college is open. Your complete address will be sent to you with your room assignment.
How do telephone service and long distance telephone calls work?
Each student will be provided with a private phone connection. Students must provide their own phone and make their own arrangements for phone service preferences. See a listing of long distance phone providers on the bulletin boards.
What type of computer access will I have?
Your room is equipped with an Ethernet jack for hard-wired network access and wireless access available throughout the building.
When will I find out where I live and with whom?
Towards the end of July, the Office of Student Housing will mail out room assignment packets containing your room assignment, roommate and suitemate information, and details about the check-in process. These packets will only be mailed to students that have submitted a completed application, a signed contract, the application fee, and security deposit.
Can I request a roommate?
Yes, but make sure your roommate preference also completes and submits an application packet as early as possible. Remember, spaces are limited and are filled on a first come/first served priority. It is also helpful if your requested roommate lists you as their preferred roommate on their housing application.
How are roommates assigned?
First priority for roommate assignments is by request. We will also attempt to match students based on the different questions on your housing application (such as sleep schedule and/or academic interests)
How do I obtain my future roommates/suitemates contact information?
Roommate and suitemate information can be found in your room assignment packet, which will include the information they indicated they wanted to be released to either their roommate or suitemate. Please be sure you review this section on your own application as the Office of Student Housing will not release any information, name included, unless approved by the applicant on their application.
Can I switch roommates?
Prior to moving into the building, please notify in writing the Office of Student Housing any requests regarding your room and roommate assignments. The Office will do its best to try and accommodate those requests. During the semester, roommate and room switches can occur during the fifth week of the semester. It does happen on occasion to find roommates initially uncomfortable with one another. The five week window is to encourage residents to resolve the issues in a more direct and proactive way before moving rooms or changing roommates. If you continue to be curious about this option, the Resident Advisor or Manager of Campus Suites can walk you through the paperwork and process.
What furniture is typically found in a suite?
The following is provided for your use:
- Extra long twin bed (please purchase extra long bedding)
- Desk and chair
- Clothes bureau
- Telephone jack (telephone not provided)
- Cable jack
- Ethernet connection
- Window coverings
- Smoke detector
Can furniture be removed from the suite and replaced with my own?
All furniture must remain in the suite.
How much should I bring with me when I move in?
Use your best judgment. We suggest you bring only one carload. We encourage you to contact your future suitemates prior to moving in to discuss the idea of sharing things to avoid duplicating non-personal items. Remember that space is limited!
What should I bring with me when I move in?
Some of your essentials will be:
- Touch-tone phone
- Answering machine
- Non-halogen desk, floor, or bedside lamp for reading and studying
- Extra long twin sheet set
- Comforter/bedspread and blanket
- Towels and washcloths
- Alarm clock
- Personal toiletries (shampoo, soap, lotion, etc)
- Power Strip(s)
- Ethernet cord
- Laundry basket/bag (and detergent)
- Pots/pans/dishes/kitchen utensils (check with suitemates to determine who brings each item)
- Warm coat and boots
- Stereo, walkman
- Video games
How can I decorate my suite?
We do not allow residents to paint their walls, ceilings, floor, or building-provided furnishings. You may personalize your room in the following ways:

What appliances may I bring?
You may bring a microwave (no more than 700 watts), radio, stereo, computer, hair dryer, electric razor, phone, TV, VCR, DVD, iron, alarm clock, drip coffee maker, espresso maker, cup warmer, air popcorn maker, blender, smoothie maker, toaster, hot pot.
What should I leave home when I move in?
Firearms and other weapons and explosives of any kind are forbidden. Leave all fire hazard or flammable items such as candles, incense, firecrackers, kerosene or oil lamps at home. Also leave all hazardous electrical appliances at home, such as
- Appliances with open heating elements (oil popcorn maker, toaster, toaster oven, hot plate-burner type, counter-top grill, pizza baker/carousel, quesadilla maker, countertop sandwich maker, space heater)
- Candles and candle warmers
- Halogen lamps (they can cause fires)
- Decorative lights
- Multiple outlet (octopus) adapters
- Concealed extension cords
- Alcohol, including empty containers, and drugs/drug paraphernalia (the building is alcohol and drug-free)
I am an avid hunter. Is there a place where I can safely store my guns?
While many individuals in the area take part in hunting activities, weapons are not permitted in student housing. This Campus Suites Handbook explicitly identifies firearms, ammunition, weapons, fireworks, explosives, noxious materials, incendiary devices, dangerous instruments, pellet guns of any kind, rifles (hunting or otherwise), hand guns, BB guns, paint ball guns, bows and arrows, switchblade knives, bayonets, and all concealable weapons with blades over three inches in length. These items are not permitted even if students do not intend to use them at any point during the year. We ask that you keep these items at home or in a storage space located off-campus. If you need assistance locating storage facilities in the area, please connect with the Manager of Campus Suites.
If I bring a bicycle, where can I store it during the year?
There is a bicycle rack located next to the building for storage purposes during the year. If you are concerned about storing your bike outside during the winter months, we ask that you take the bike home at that time as they are not permitted to be stored in the building.
What is there to do in the Campus Suites?
Beyond attending classes and studying, hanging out with friends, and getting plenty of good sleep, there are a variety of things to do in the building. Throughout each month, Resident Advisors facilitate various programs and activities, fun and educational. Some programs we’ve had this year include, among others, cooking challenges, free tubing night at Mt. Zion, door decorating, jeopardy, and an open question and answer session with a local health professional. Each resident is not only more than welcome to participate in these activities but to also think and plan activities of their own through the Activities Board meeting each week. In a less organized capacity, students often gather together to play games, watch movies, go shopping, try a new recipe, visit the Lindquist Student Center to use the weight room, or take a quick weekend road trip to Marquette. If you are interested in taking on a leadership role, there are opportunities throughout the year to apply for the Resident Advisor and Community Assistant positions. The great thing about the Campus Suites is there is always an opportunity to create, just bring it up to one of the Resident Advisors and/or the Manager of Campus Suites and we’ll see how we can help you get it rolling.
How do I get involved?
Involvement in the total college experience contributes to the success of students at GCC. You could consider taking on a leadership position in student housing, attending activities and programs put on by the Resident Advisors, and/or offer the Resident Advisors assistance in planning, promoting, and participating in programs and community events.
There are also opportunities to get involved throughout campus. From student activities, student senate, and campus organizations, students at GCC find many ways to complement their academic experience with co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Check with the Student Activities Office in the Lindquist Student Center or the Dean of Students Office to learn more about the various opportunities around campus.
Am I required to attend all of the activities?
While you are strongly encouraged to participate in many activities, you are not required to do so. It is important to remember that the activities and programs organized in the Campus Suites and throughout campus are done for your interest, entertainment, and benefit, and they are often free. Take advantage of those opportunities to gain the most out of your experience and, better yet, see how you can help organize an activity.
As a resident of the Campus Suites, you are required to attend the monthly community meetings. These are mandatory as the Resident Advisors will be sharing pertinent information with the residents about any building concerns, upcoming activities, and important dates.
What is the policy regarding overnight guests?
Residents are permitted to have guests stay with them throughout the year so long as residents are sensitive to and respectful of the needs of their roommate/suitemates and fellow residents. Specifically, residents may host up to 3 guests overnight for no longer than 48 hours. The guests will need to check-in at the front desk and cannot be under the age of 18. Lastly, residents need to inform their guests of the building’s policies, as residents are responsible for their guests, and the residents need to escort their guests throughout the building. This is done as a safety measure for residents and their guests as well as a courtesy to the community in which the residents all share together.
What is the smoking policy?
Smoking is not permitted in the building under any circumstances. As per campus policy, the area within 50-feet of any building entrance is also designated as smoke-free, including the Campus Suites. Any student found in violation of this policy will be subject to misconduct action. Additionally, the student may be charged for damages to the building. There is a space designated for residents located conveniently outside the building. We ask that students use this space and properly dispose of their trash when done in one of the nearby trashcans.
What is the alcohol and drug policy?
All residents, including those over the age of 21, and their guests are not permitted to have alcohol and/or illegal drugs in the building at any time. This includes the possession of any empty containers or paraphernalia. If you are planning to bring a collectible bottle, it is strongly encouraged that you leave that item at home.
What happens if I violate any of the policies?
A staff member will document the violation and forward it onto the Manager of Campus Suites. In coordination with the Director of the Lindquist Student Center and the Dean of Students, the Manager of Campus Suites will initiate the conduct hearing process, in which you will be provided an opportunity to address the violation. Based on the decision of the hearing and the gravity of the violation, possible outcomes may include a warning, fine, community service, educational project, probation, and possibly eviction.
